Beaconsfield High School teachers Rosemary Hill and Louise Adam are taking part in the pilot project of 27 schools that are sharing strategies for introducing compulsory GOAL content into the curriculum. Their enthusiasm is all the more appealing because their feet are planted firmly on the classroom floor.

A Little Tweak Here, a Little Tweak There
Attention: Student Bloggers at Work
Two teachers in two elementary schools in the Eastern Townships have introduced blogging into their students’ classroom routine. Through their blogs, students reflect on their learning, chart their progress and leave a positive digital footprint that they can look back on over time.

GOAL is This Teacher’s Reality Check
Had he never heard of the Guidance-Oriented Approach to Learning, Tim Romanow would still be using it with his class. “Eventually students go out into the world and have to get a job. As teachers, we need to let them know there is a purpose behind everything we do. We need to make learning real for them.”

Finding Their Place in the Sun
The mission of schools “to instruct, socialize and qualify” is a tall order that only intensifies when students have significant physical, intellectual or behavioural issues. Here’s how a group of RSB educators put their heads together to give non-mainstream students in two separate programs a chance to help each other.
No Shortcuts in Bagel-making. . . or Life
Students at Perspectives 1, an EMSB outreach school, had an inspiring lesson on entrepreneurship and hard work from Vince Morena, a co-owner of Montréal’s famed St-Viateur Bagel. Exposing students to a local success story is one way GOAL contributes to their self-discovery and career exploration.

TOKW Fast-forwards Students into the Future
On the 20th anniversary of Take Our Kids to Work™ Day, a young man from CQSB’s St. Patrick’s High School shadowed none other than the Education minister, Yves Bolduc, while a young woman from EMSB’s Royal West Academy learned what it’s like to be an executive at L’Oréal Canada.

Keep Calm and Make Good Career Choices!
Next fall—from Elementary Cycle Three on—Québec schools will introduce 5 to 10 hours of compulsory GOAL content. To pave the way, 28 pilot schools are now sharing strategies for integrating this content naturally into the curriculum. Teachers at Cedar Street and Mary Gardner Schools explain why they chose to be involved.

GOAL Goes to the Dogs
As part of their curriculum, students in Riverdale High School’s CFER program operate an e-waste recycling business. In converting an old TV console into a funky new dog bed, they used competencies learned through art, entrepreneurship and their workshop to raise money for a local organization that helps canines in need.

·What's New in ACGC
The ACGC “Vibe” site has been revamped and is much easier to navigate. Click here to access the Contenus en orientation scolaire et professionnelle (COSP) site on Quebec.ca.
Firstly, you will have to create an account, which is free and simple to create.
Meanwhile, the LEARN site will is hosting some ACGC documents in English that were previously on Vibe. Until that task is completed, please contact your school board’s GOAL consultant if you require documents that are not yet available on LEARN or Quebec.ca.
For those unfamiliar with the ACGC, a video in English is now available on the MEQ YouTube page, entitled, Introduction to Academic and Career Guidance Content (ACGC).
If you have questions about ACGC or GOAL, contact your school board’s GOAL consultant.

“When I talk with teachers about GOAL, they often respond: ‘I’ve heard the word but don’t know what it stands for.’ When I explain it, they say: ‘Okay, that makes sense.’” - Rosemary Hill, Teacher
