In the mid-1990s, the government set in motion an extensive review and public consultations that resulted in a series of reforms to the financial sector and the creation of the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada (FCAC).

As part of their curriculum, students in Riverdale High School’s CFER program operate an e-waste recycling business. In converting an old TV console into a funky new dog bed, they used competencies learned through art, entrepreneurship and their workshop to raise money for a local organization that helps canines in need.

A national survey of young Canadians aged 17 to 20 commissioned by the B.C. Securities Commission in 2011 revealed that half of respondents were already carrying debt. That is just one statistic underlying the Canadian Foundation for Economic Education’s decision to launch an annual “Talk with Our Kids About Money Day.”
