The mission of schools “to instruct, socialize and qualify” is a tall order that only intensifies when students have significant physical, intellectual or behavioural issues. Here’s how a group of RSB educators put their heads together to give non-mainstream students in two separate programs a chance to help each other.

No Shortcuts in Bagel-making. . . or Life
Students at Perspectives 1, an EMSB outreach school, had an inspiring lesson on entrepreneurship and hard work from Vince Morena, a co-owner of Montréal’s famed St-Viateur Bagel. Exposing students to a local success story is one way GOAL contributes to their self-discovery and career exploration.

On the 20th anniversary of Take Our Kids to Work™ Day, a young man from CQSB’s St. Patrick’s High School shadowed none other than the Education minister, Yves Bolduc, while a young woman from EMSB’s Royal West Academy learned what it’s like to be an executive at L’Oréal Canada.
Keep Calm and Make Good Career Choices!
Next fall—from Elementary Cycle Three on—Québec schools will introduce 5 to 10 hours of compulsory GOAL content. To pave the way, 28 pilot schools are now sharing strategies for integrating this content naturally into the curriculum. Teachers at Cedar Street and Mary Gardner Schools explain why they chose to be involved.
GOAL Goes to the Dogs
As part of their curriculum, students in Riverdale High School’s CFER program operate an e-waste recycling business. In converting an old TV console into a funky new dog bed, they used competencies learned through art, entrepreneurship and their workshop to raise money for a local organization that helps canines in need.
